product description
Doctoral Sword without blade etching. length 30" / 760 mm
Made in Germany
Doctoral sword with leather scabbard and shield with customized engraving.
In Finland and other countries it is a tradition to wear a sword and hat when graduating from university.
WKC Solingen exclusively manufactures doctoral swords (Tohtorinmiekka) based on the original design by Akseli Gallen-Kallela from Finland.
WKC developed the sword with Akseli Gallen-Kallela in 1918 and the original tools are still preserved.
In 1938, 31st US President Herbert Hoover was given the honorary doctorate by Helsinki University and he also received a WKC doctoral sword:
The German quality can be seen in every detail.
The doctoral sword symbolizes truth and is a weapon used in defense of truth, right and good.
The sword is a civilian sword designed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela and officially endorsed by independent Finland.
A guard shield is attached to the sword, which can be engraved with a coat of arms or logo.
The name and date of the graduation are usually engraved on the shiny-polished stainless steel blade.
The sword is carried on the left side with a leather pouch or belt holder.
